Orchestral Magic

Laura Fiegelist

Notes bounce off strings,
powered by electric shocks.
Magically, the air coming from
delicate flutes floats to the sky,
brushing the clouds while
low and heavy tunes blast
from the brass section,
flowing like molasses, thick and slow.

Notes bounce off strings,
powered by electric shocks.
Magically, the air coming from
delicate flutes floats to the sky,
brushing the clouds while
low and heavy tunes blast
from the brass section,
flowing like molasses, thick and slow.

Crisp, polished, pointed notes
spring from the tips of bows
moving up and down in unison,
dancing as the choreographer
on the platform waves a stick.
I own a bow that dances
too, making my ears
even more alert to the rhythm
my heroes dance to.

Sounds reverberate from the ceiling,
walls and stage until my body
drowns in beautiful harmonies.
I have the ability to pick out each
instrument, each singing
a different song, yet all
the instruments together
create one melody.
How’s it possible these sounds
work so well together? Only
a magician could perform this stunt.

A powerful emotion springs up
in me like a Jack-in-the-box.
The sounds are distant,
then creep…slowly...until…
SURPRISE! Notes start
sprinting to the finish line.
If I squint, I can see them running
off the loose pages.

I want to cry, no, laugh—
I do both.
